Nashville Flood 2010

You may or may not have heard about the flood that devastated Nashville, Tennessee.  They are calling this a 1,000 year flood.  The water rose well over 10 feet in parts of downtown Nashville (flood stage is around 40 feet.  The final number was around 52 feet).  North of town, the river was above 56 feet.

Buildings were swept away.  Cars stacked on one another like they were blocks.  Homes almost completely underwater.

If you haven’t seen the pictures, the Boston Globe’s “Big Picture” gives you a pretty good representation of what happened.

I am perfectly fine.  My house is safe, undamaged, and dry.  Thousands upon thousands of others are not so lucky.  You may not be in the area, but please consider making a donation to one of the following groups.  Many of these people did not live in flood plains and did not have flood insurance.  They will need assistance for weeks and months to come.

  • Cross Point Community Church – my church has a campus in the Bellevue area – one of the areas hardest hit by the floods.  They have set up a command center to take donations, food, and send out teams of volunteers to clean up.
  • Nashville Red Cross – providing counseling, prescriptions and other services to flood victims.
  • Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee – has two funds.  The Nashville fund will give grants to individuals in need of assistance.  The Tennessee fund will give grants to organizations working to provide relief across the mid-state area.

Please pray for our community.  There are still people missing.  Pray for peace, safety, and love for one another.
